Hot day and short notice but we still had a great turnout for the Mother's Day Invitational with 14 players and a packed bleachers as Phil brought his cheering section. A family affair as Phil's family watched and cheered the game on learning the nuances of the game, two of his family participated as we had our youngest player, Phil's granddaughter, Ellie, who made the play of the game, much to the dismay of Barb, who popped a double over first base side into the waiting arms of Ellie who made a stupendous catch. Not to be outdone Phil hauled one in directly after that. Ellie also snuck a grounder to the first base side cone for her first single and an RBI, aiding her team to the most runs they scored in the first inning. Phil contributed a couple of singles in his at bats as well. Phil's son in law, Mike, played outfield and nearly caught a foul ball one handed along with hitting a single, double and a triple garnering 2 RBIs. Great Phil Family contributions on the day.
We had John Withers' wife, Cindy, out again today for her second outing with the group and she had some great plate appearance with 2 doubles while contributing a terrific catch of a pop-up while dancing in the first base gutter. Barb made her way back to our field and aside from being robbed of a nice double, she added 2 singles for her team. Phyliss continues to play the game well assisting with some grounder put-outs and contributing 3 singles putting the ball in play all but one at bat.
Gordon batted for the cycle showing no signs of back issues and made some great defensive catches on the front line of defense. Denis maintained the usual scorebook and performed the designated hitting duties for both teams. Some(one) thought he played favorites in that department but he actually contributed 3 singles while only a double and single for the opposing team (there's no whining in stickball ...).
Dave Miller making his debut at third performed admirably with several put outs handling some hot shots and had 2 singles on the day.
John W. won the longest ball competition with his automatic home run along with 2 singles while covering the outfield pop ups. The other John, Mayhue, pitched a great game while contributing a couple singles.
Fran singling 3 times and made his debut at 3rd also, handling some tight grounders, some of which were made to look hard ;-) but having a successful start to a bright future.
Manny arriving after the visitors first twinning to be added to the home team and had a double on the day and played the outfield with his usual brilliance hauling in some long shots.
A great time was had by all as the heat beat down on the end of 7 innings as the Ball Busters bested the SUNS of Pitches by 4 runs in a low scoring 8 to 4 win.
