Wrap-Up
We had a great Memorial Day Tournament and we had another exciting match-up this week as well!!! The weather was great again and those of us that got the message that we play at
10 o’clock every Monday in the Summer (weather permitting)
were out on the street for a battle that went well into lunch time!! We had 2 new players join us as Bob, Gordon’s recently retired neighbor (yes a Bob to replace the other 2 ;-) came to check out stickball due to the Golf Club being closed on Monday – another good reason to have Stickball on MONDAY 😊. Also had George Bradley, who must have been coaxed by Bo Harris to come down – George brought his exceptional camera and photography skill by to give us some ‘exposure’ (pun intended) but we convinced him to play when he realized he would even the teams at 5 vs 5. That was until Bo showed up to give the Dogs a “leg up” in the fight :-0 Both Bob and George took their positions at 3rd and played a good first game at the hot position – equally learning the power of the SPALDEEN and the “way the ball bounces”. Both got in the batting groove and hit a HR each!!! Along with singles each as well. Each brought some well-known Stickball chatter to the proceeding with George and Bo doing most of the dialogue. It was evident they a great time and we welcome them back for future matches. This week marked the return of our beloved veteran, Phil Dunaway!! He was welcomed back to the tune of being pelted by some scorching grounders that he finally lassoed and a single for his first at bat in many a moon (followed by a single in his final at bat as he added an RBI and became the go ahead RBI added the final HR to come!!).
We did, however, add some extra stoppage time, like that of a Soccer Match, as the Sherriff was called out ONCE AGAIN to “roust some rowdy kids playing in the street.” 😊 No lie, that’s what the Sherriff told us was the call he was answering :-0 He stayed in the middle of the street (blocking traffic :-0) for a few minutes) surveying the situation; convinced we weren’t a crazy gang wielding sticks and clubs, he eventually made his way around the back side of little Gem and off to catch some REAL delinquents 😊 The game progressed!!!
By this time the two teams were living up to their namesakes and fighting like CATS and DOGS 😊 Gordon was pitching a great game for both teams and went for the entire game!! Then after the unexpected Sherriff's drive by, the game climaxed with the ultimate excitement of the last twinning for each team. We started with 5 on 5 but increased to 6 vs 5 with Bo joining the Dogs in the first inning. Little did we know that the game’s final exciting play would be another 3 run walk-off HR for the home team, the Cats. Manny, after battling the Cats pitching for the entire game, finally connected with a HR blast that caught Bo by surprise as he stepped in one step too many as the ball ricocheted off his outstretched hands and into automatic land for a Cats win. The Dogs had put the pressure on by getting a 6 run (over the MAX 5) in their last inning to edge ahead of the Cats by one with single after single after single, which wasn’t enough to chase the Cats away… :-0 Especially since Manny was killing it in the outfield by catching many, many, many of the Dogs long balls – notably ones by Roger, John, 2 by Fran, and one of Bob’s (what an defensive display!! The Dogs were scratching their heads – and not due to fleas but flies :-0).
Denis and Griffin kept the score which is detailed below:
DOGS (9 Runs - L)
Bill – 4/8, 3S, D
Fran (Kyle Squibber) – 4/8, 2S, T, HR, 3 RBI
Roger – 6/7 (switch hitting), 4S, D, T, RBI
John – 3/6, 4S, 2 RBI
Bob (First HR of his career) – 3/7, 2S, HR, RBI
Bo – 5/7, 4S, HR, 2 RBI
CATS (11 Runs - W)
Manny (MVP) – 3/6, S, D, HR, 3 RBI – THE WALK-OFF!!!
Rick – 3/5, 2S, D, 2 RBI
Chuck – 3/5, S, D, T, 2RBI
George (first career HR) – 2/5, S, 2T, 2 RBI !!
Phil – 2/5, 2S, 2 RBI – Welcome back Phil!!
This game was another BLAST!!! A great outing with plenty of team chatter and comradery; no one got hurt and although many balls went for long rides, few were lost to Paperwhite 😊
NEXT GAME :
Monday the 9th of June (with Summer fast approaching)
10 O’Clock on Paperwhite!!!
