Star Spangled Saturday

Writer's picture: rogergoehringrogergoehring

Summer stickball starting with a bang on Saturday's as a great many turn out to play, including our independence day weekend event. And what a difference from last Wednesday with our usual 4 on 4 (or so) when one handed catches were all the rage and homers abounded, as outfielders leaned to the error side. This day we welcomed back Ed from his hamstring rehab and (thank GOD) we got Denis back as the scorekeeper!! While Denis batted for both teams after his week absence his performance at the plate fizzled like a sparkler but his performance on the books was bang on! (Thanks Denis, the book looks really clean and easy to follow.) Steve Woods made a reappearance with an explosive lead off triple and continued to put the ball in play well only to be denied by some good defensive plays. Which with 8 players in the field was definitely a big change from our weekday minimal defensive alignment. Some great defensive plays on both sides as players continue to get a handle on the spaldeen but none as spectacular as Mo stepping one step to the right and snuffing out a rocket as he smothered it with a two hand cupping action - truely amazing! Barb and Cindy continue in their efforts to hit balls that just won't have eyes to find the holes in the defense - they keep on smacking the spaldeen, putting the ball in play - something is sure to happen 'on any given day' ...

Mound Pounders taking on the One Hit Wonders

Mound Pounders working on a slow roll despite Gordon 's high powered offensive on the day, I won't bore anyone with the details since he seems to be his own press agent on the field.... ;-)

John W. driving in 2 of the three runs for the Pounders, while a player already named got in one other over the first three innings.

Meanwhile, in the home half of the game, Wonders were forging ahead with 5 runs off an Ed HR (who hasn't lost anything having set out for week) He came back blasting those same long shots (sometimes foul) as he had been doing. Phil D and Steve aiding the team by getting on with triples as Mo drove in Phil in the first and then sent a liner to the opposite field fooling the defense as it landed on the AUTO line for 2 RBIs since Dave Miller had just tripled and was waiting on third.

Then in the top of the sixth the visitors 'Moundied' an attack of epic proportions to forge a 7 to 5 lead, leaving everyone questioning the number of innings to be played. With team singles and a Bill double followed by a player to be named later hitting a HR, pounders posted 4 leaving the One hits Wondering what had happened. Still bedazzled by the fireworks of the opposition the Wonders were only able to garner a run on a Manny rocket to the opposite field.

As 8 innings was decided upon, to allow for the Wonders to regain their composure, the Pounders continued to relentlessly attack the defense of the Wonders: doubling, singling and tripling for a 3 run cushion in the 7th and going quietly 3 up 3 down in the 8th as the bottom of the eighth came around.

In very uncharacteristic fashion the Wonders pitching staff aced their teammates along with a couple of fly outs by the Pounders in a 3 up and 3 down 2 inning run that left the game as a fizzled dud of a twinning and the Wonders Wondering ...

**** FINAL: ‘Quarter Pounders’ – 10

'Stevie Wonders' – 6 ****

Quote of the Day – "Don't worry about your nails and hit the ball" - to Barb

Honorable Mention - "I'm batting 1.000 today"
