After a long hiatus from the Blog, hard to live up to the Lillies and Roses tourney, along with some sparse turn-outs of late - though we had some good short handed games anyway, just not much to report.
We had another Bob, goes by Bobby, report for duty - need to get his email, if anyone has it, forward the link and email to him (include me on it). Bobby did well, getting his first hits: 2 singles and a double (3 for 5 for his first outing), while taking to the front line of defense. And the other Bobby - the one armed, walker yielding, big swinging, everybody's coach and all time catcher came down for a visit. It was good to see him once again in the Cul-de-Sac, even if not to play.
So for the 9-11 Invitational the Weekend Warriors take on the Screwballs, Roger having separated the players into teams, again seeming to make them a bit uneven - though they looked it on paper?!?! While the score didn't look too devastating the Warriors were never really in the hunt and with an un-played twinning the Screwballs still had a commanding lead as the Warriors final twinning was a quiet 'one', literally only 1 run scored.
Cindy was the highlight of the Warriors day, besides the great weather of the morning. When she wasn't hitting grounders to John W. - she was smacking doubles and getting RBIs. In the field on the front line she made two great pop fly catches and some good plays on grounders. An MVP day for Cindy in a losing effort as the team didn't follow in her performance. Even with some unforced errors for singles and aside from a 3 Manny (with 7 RBIs) and 2 Norm homers (with 3 more RBIs (!), too many runners were left stranded.
For the Screwballs, Dave Miller swinging the heavy 'post hole digger' bat found a way to beat Manny - hit it over his head, and Fran went Automatic (3 RBIs) on Roger and Manny to avoid any out with his blast. (Craig went New York style and cut off a post hole digger arm to form a bat that has 2 air holes in the top for sound affects ;-) Other new bats have arrived as Norm replaced the black beauty, and was it ever, as he popped a few homers with it on the day. Denis contributed another dowel bat to the mix. John W continued to belt long homers ( and 7 RBIs) with Manny almost reeling one in at the Auto line, just missing getting the handle on it and Roger stopped him once on a foul pop out. But it wasn't enough to stop the Screwballs hits including Bill T. who had a hitting day (2 RBIs) garnering a Triple, Double and 3 singles, one of which was a slow rolling single up the middle no one on the front line of defense felt like getting apparently - but it was amusing to all? Dave and Craig going 4 or 5 and Fran 4 for 6. Bob S. and Bob L. were sorely missed by whichever team they would have been on as the 3rd base fielding position was way below their standards on a BAD day :-0 Sorry guys ... just sayin' (not that this writer would do any better ...)
We played 8 innings on a day that will remain always a tribute the victims and heroes of one of the greatest tragedies perpetuated on American soil. If we could only recapture the 9-12-01 consciousness when we all bonded together regardless of race, belief, creed, or ideology, but as AMERICANS ... NEVER FORGET!!!
