Cap and Shirt Day

Updated: Jul 24, 2023

What a great turnout for our Cap and Shirt day!! Newly arrived caps and shirts from Charlie Goldman's JAYCOR, for all your printing needs :-) Many new players, recipients of the new style on hand to partake of the fun and comradery that is stickball! We had so many our DH/scorekeeper benched himself as new arrivals stacked the scoresheet full. A full roster of 9 vs 9 was the final tally anad an additional visitor, Dianna Clark, whom Kennedy brought with him spreading the news of stickball at the pickleball courts! While it was great to have all the new and old players together on a beautiful morning, it did expose a problem with our communication of rules as we usually tend to forget the intricacies of those and covering them only "as we go" or as circumstances come up. So, to that end, I wanted to be sure and post on the blog the highlights of the day and expose all our newer participants to the site where RULES and much more are posted. Note the main menu on the opening page, as ABOUT and GALLERY and RULES options provide further details to the stickball world ;-) -- even the old timers can gain wisdom from reviewing the rules here :-)))))

Wrap Up

The weather was perfect for a stickball game, cool and overcast making the new orange balls (thanks to Rick for contributing new ones) stand out nicely. We welcomed many newer faces (Kennedy, Bo, and our newest visitor, Dianna) and returning ones (Mitch, Bob S., Charlotte, Dani, Sue, Gene, along with Max and Norm making appearances following long absences). Dianna making her presence known right away with her first hit, a single, on her first at bat! Along with playing the front line of defense with some great fielding opportunities, getting into the game quickly!

The game started out even enough as the visiting Hungry Hippos went down quickly in their first twinning (two innings) having only scored a run on three hits, one, a booming HR to an outfield missing the famous Manny who had left early for personal reasons. (Later discovered that all is well, as we all wondered when he might return but never showed back up.) The home Agitators answered back as Sue knocked a long triple depth fly that was caught by Roger in her opening appearance (which she would later send them away from him to collect a HR and a triple in her first appearance of the year!!) The Agitators followed with a run of their own as a Bill Trofemuk's triple scored Gene from first.

After a slow start the Hippos came up with three more in the second twinning as Bob S. posted a second single and Bo ripped a triple followed by another Max, the Commish, homer. Dani getting her second single of 3 on the day in her season debut but getting stranded on first. The Agitators pitching shut down their bats as only Bill Baker, posting a double, and Sue ,her triple, were left on base.

The Hippos would go on to score 7 more runs to close out their 3 innings on Mitch's 2 doubles, Charlotte getting her first hit after placing the ball in play many of her at bats, Bo hitting a triple and 2 singles, along with Max's two singles. All of which posed to much of a deficit for the Agitators to overcome as they scored one run on Sue's HR and 2 on Norm's line drive homer to left field but went quietly in the bottom of the seventh even though Chuck posted his first single of the day and Gene moved him to second.
