This is how John Mayhue felt today, both pitching and batting as he was a spaldeen magnet, his own players aiming for him with hits up the middle and pitchers brushing him off the plate!!!
Prompting the quote of the day:
"I'm beginning to take this personal!"
We had Manny in his golden slippers performing Cinderella catches and batting like a champ - two times in a row he made one hand grab, palm up, catches on batting practice fly balls. He did, however, resort to both hands in the game just to be sure, especially on the line drives ;-) Our teams lately are having innings with more, MAX, runs than Joe Willies' Panty hose :-0
Returning for warm-ups to opening day were Charlie Goldman playing a mean infield despite not being able to see the ball :-0 Ed Hance back off the injured reserve duties of catching to take the outfield. Bobby Belt also paying a visit as a spectator after recuperating from last games woes. We turned a couple of spectators into hitters to attract them to the game and they did rather well. Welcome Jimmy Jackson, a baseball fan/player and softball enthusiast up until recently, and Richard Mire, a neighbor of Gordon's who came down to witness the game and finally got coerced into swinging the bat.
The 'Gray-Test-' – Bob L., Bill T., Ed, Dave M., Norm, John
TAKING ON -
Comebackers – Gordon, Roger, Steve, Charlie, Manny, Denis
Scorer: [N-less] Denis (batting/DH and scoring)
The Comebackers didn't have to live up to their name staying ahead of the Gray all the way; thus the only comebackers were the ones John saw while pitching to his team, and he saw plenty! The Great started with a 'worst to first' twinning as they garnered 0 in the first inning and MAX (5) in the second. Bob L. displaying his batting fireworks after practicing in his garage over the past few days contributing greatly to the cause.
Backers answered with 8 runs of their own, also MAX-ing their second inning. From there on Great inched closer to the tiny increasing Backers lead only to fall short in the seventh, being limited to 1 run - a homer by Norm who finally joined the scoring on a line drive shot to center to low and hot for Roger to handle as he got a hand and a knee on it but it hit the pavement.
HOME RUNS: Bob L., Ed, Norm, Manny (2!) , [Goron robbed of a cycle in the fourth by Ed]
TRIPLES: Bill T., Gordon, Roger
DOUBLES: Bob L, Bill T., Ed, Gordon, Roger, Charlie 'I can't see hitting another single',
Steve (2), Manny (2)
SINGLES: Bob L. (3!), Bill T. (3), Dave M. (2), Gordon (2), Roger, Steve, Charlie (3!), Denis (3!)
John on the day got hit more than he hit :-0 - better luck next game John!!!
(though he did hit a triple depth fly robbed by Roger in LF)
**** FINAL: ‘GRAY TEST' ......................... 5
‘Stay Aheads’ ...................... 13 ****
RBIs: Bob L. (2), Billy(2), Ed (4!), Norm (1)
Denis (1), Charlie (1),Steve (2), Roger (3), Gordon (2), Manny (5!)
?! players to be named later ?! ;-)
